August 27, 2021 – In the season finale, Wake Orthopaedics played their best tennis of the season to win the 2021 Raleigh Pro League Championship 3-1 over defending Champions Team RDUTennis. Playing in their 4th consecutive Championship match, Wake Ortho turned the tables on RDUTennis after losing to them in the 2019 Championship. Two things are becoming certain in the Raleigh Pro League, it’s tough to repeat as Champions and Team Wake Ortho will be in the Championship match each year.
Playing in front of a large crowd at Seven Oaks Swim & Racquet Club, Team Wake Ortho scored the first court point as Caylan Ashworth and Jon Davis won the mixed doubles over Team RDU’s Nena Day and Carlos Garcia 6-2 6-1. Next off was the Women’s court in what was the most exciting match of the evening with Wake Ortho’s Caitlin Whoriskey and Kris McGrath winning over RDU’s Tessie Choo and Joanna Nalborska 6-3 6-3 giving Wake Ortho a 2-0 lead for the match.
Wake Ortho sealed the Championship on the Men’s 1 court when Justin Roberson and Cameron Rosenow defeated RDU’s Kyle Spencer and Brian Rosenthal 6-3 6-2 as the match ended with Rosenow thrilling the crowd by chasing down a lob behind the baseline and hitting a tweener that was volleyed out by RDU.
With the Championship determined, the Men’s 2 court was allowed to finish giving RDU their solo point of the evening as Cris James and Jay Lewandowski won over Team Wake Ortho’s Glen Kitner and Lilo Pelegrino 6-3 6-4.
On paper, these two teams matched up well with each other, but last night Team Wake Orthopaedics just played better tennis and proved they deserve to be the Champions. Congratulation to Team Wake Orthopaedics.
