August 19, 2022 – Team Wake Orthopaedics secures their spot in the Championship match with a win over Team White Dahlia and Team RDUTennis pulls off the upset against Team Pursuit Wealth to advance. Big crowd at the Raleigh Racquet Club and lots of great tennis to enjoy.
Defending Champions Team Wake Orthopaedics moves on the the Championship match for the 5th year in a row with a 3-1 win over Team White Dahlia in a rematch from a week ago. White Dahlia came in with a full team after playing short-handed last week determined to upset the defending champions, but Wake Ortho ensured the upset would not happen with a strong team performance. Wake Ortho’s Caitlin Whorsikey and Kris McGrath finished up first with a 6-3 6-4 win over White Dahlia’s Caylan Ashworth and Devan McCluskey. The Men’s 1 court was next to finish as Wake Ortho’s Jon Janda and Justin Roberson bested White Dahlia’s Paul Goode and Michael Polasek 6-4 7-5 giving Team Wake Ortho a 2-0 lead. Wake Ortho’s Jon Davis and Lilo Pelegrino were locked in a battle with White Dahlia’s Josh Franceschina and Philip Faulkner having lost the 1st set 6-7 and came back to win the 2nd 6-4 pushing the match into a 3rd set tiebreak. Davis/Roberson came out strong in the tiebreak and cruised to the win 10-3 giving Team Wake Ortho the point needed to secure the team win and advance to the Championship. Meanwhile on the Mixed court, Team White Dahlia’s Isabel Boada and Jose Velazquez battled Team Wake Ortho’s Liz Perkins and Jason Kinder in a really tight match and won a 2nd set tiebreak to give White Dahlia it’s only court for the evening 7-5 7-6. With the team win, Wake Ortho has a chance to repeat as Raleigh Pro League Champions and we’ll see if they can pull that off next Friday night.
In one of the most competitive matches of the season, Team RDUTennis pulls off the upset of previously undefeated Team Pursuit Wealth to advance and setup a rematch of last year’s Championship Match. The Men’s 2 court finished 1st as Team RDUTennis’ Kyle Spencer and Matt Nicholson pulled out a tight match against Team Pursuit Wealth’s Quentin Guichard and Glen Kitner 7-5 7-6. The Mixed court finished up next where RDU’s Tessie Choo and Brian Rosenthal won a 3rd set tiebreak over Pursuit Wealth’s Heather Waters and Geoff Gisler to win 7-5 3-6 10-4 and put Team RDUTennis up in courts 2-0. Team Pursuit Wealth’s Nena Day and Jessica Mauney battled hard to win their court in a 3rd set tiebreak over RDU’s Kristen Kepler and Jeni Burnette 7-5 3-6 12-10 to make the team score 2-1. All eyes turned to the Men’s 1 court where Team RDU’s Christian Welte and Dana Parziale were locked in a battle the Pursuit Wealth’s William Noblitt and Anu Kodali in what was the match of the evening. Welte/Parziale won the 1st set 6-4, but Noblitt/Kodali fought back and won the 2nd in a tiebreak. Both teams displayed amazing tennis as they went back and forth in the 3rd set tiebreak before Welte/Parziale would prevail and win 11-9. The court win gave Team RDUTennis the team win and sends them to the Championship to face the defending Champions.
Congratulations to Team White Dahlia and Team Pursuit Wealth for all their efforts. Although their season’s ended last night, both teams have so much to be proud of and I know Raleigh Pro League fans appreciate the great tennis provided by these players throughout the summer. Looking forward to seeing them back next year.
