August 12, 2022 – Defending Champions Team Wake Orthopaedics seized the #1 seeding for the 2022 Playoffs with a 4-0 win over Team White Dahlia in front of a large enthusiastic crowd at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation. Much of the crowd was there to see Wakefield’s Assistant Teaching Pro Caitlin Whoriskey compete and she did not disappoint with a thrilling 2nd set tiebreak to win her court.
Team Wake Ortho’s cause was aided as Team White Dahlia was not able to field a full team for the match with player schedules and injuries limiting their line-up and resulting in two courts being forfeited to Team Wake Ortho. But, the Wakefield crowd was still treated to 4 courts of tennis as several players stepped up to play the Women’s and Men’s 2 courts as exhibitions.
On the courts playing for points, Team Wake Ortho’s Jon Janda and Justin Roberson bested Team White Dahlia’s Josh Franceschina and Jose Velazquez 6-0 6-4. Janda/Roberson came out strong in the 1st set, but Franceschina/Velazquez jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second before the Wake Ortho men regrouped and closed the gates taking the next 6 games. On the most watched Mixed court, Team Wake Ortho’s Caitlin Whoriskey and Lilo Peligrino came out strong to take the 1st set over Team White Dahlia’s Caylan Ashworth and Philip Faulkner 6-2, but Ashworth/Faulkner jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the 2nd before Whoriskey/Pelegrino came back to tie it at 6-6. Whoriskey/Pelegrino played strong in the tiebreak to take the match and secure the 4 court win for Team Wake Ortho and seize the #1 seeding for the Playoffs.
On the Exhibition Courts, playing the Women’s court were Team Wake Ortho’s Liz Perkins partnered with Sophia Graumann and Karen Rembert partnered with Jeni Burnette. The teams split sets with Perkins/Graumann taking the match in a 3rd set tiebreak 6-3 1-6 10-8. On the Men’s EXO court were Team Wake Ortho’s Cameron Rosenow and Matthew Moody (TWO) playing against Wake Ortho’s Jason Kinder and Team RDUTennis’ Matt Nicholson. In another match decided by a 3rd set tiebreak, Rosenow/Moody get the win 7-5 4-6 10-6. Huge thanks to all of these players for coming out to play and give the Wakefield crowd more great tennis to enjoy.
Wakefield went all out hosting the match including the Dizzy Melon band playing immediately following the match. Along with the court side grill and multiple bars, it was a good time for all who attended. Congratulations to Phoebe Hill who was the winner of a 1-hour gift certificate at White Dahlia Massage & Wellness.
Definitely looking forward to next week’s Playoffs at the Raleigh Racquet Club as Team Wake Ortho and Team White Dahlia meet again as the #1 and #4 seeds along with #2 seed Team Pursuit Wealth against #3 seed Team RDUTennis.
