July 19, 2019 – In sports, they talk about the “home team advantage”, well Team RDUTennis certainly proved the point Friday evening as they took all four courts against defending champions Team Wake Orthopaedics in front of their home crowd at the NC State University Club. The large UClub crowd cheered their Team RDUTennis on as they played tough tennis to sweep all courts and take over 1st place in the league.
Ironically, the Women’s court finished first, even though it was the only court to go to a 3rd-set tiebreak. Team RDU’s Tessie Choo and Jessica Miller took the first set handily at 6-1, but Team Wake Ortho’s Kris McGrath and Liz Perkins came back to take the second 6-4. In the 3rd-set tiebreak, Choo/Miller battled it out to win 10-8 and give Team RDU their first team point of the night. On the adjacent court, Team RDU’s Joanna Nalborska and Brian Rosenthal gave their home fans a lot to cheer about as they won the Mixed court 6-2 6-1 over Team Wake Ortho’s Caylan Ashworth and Chase Helpingstine to go up 2 courts to 0.
The Men’s #2 court was a close match as Team RDU’s Phillip Faulkner and Josh Franceschina, coming back from a 3rd-set tiebreak loss last week, posted a 7-6 6-4 win over Team Wake Ortho’s Sam Williams and Justin Roberson. This sealed the team win for Team RDUTennis, but they were not done as Cris James and Jon Davis battled it out with Team Wake Ortho’s Ben Wagland and Glen Kitner on the Men’s #1 court. James/Davis took the court 6-4 6-4 to give Team RDU the sweep and a 5-point lead in the league standings.
Both teams have one regular season match left to secure their spots in the playoffs. Team RDUTennis is in. Its just a matter of where they will be seeded. Team Wake Orthopaedics maintains their 3rd place standing in the league and needs to win some more team points to guarantee a spot in the playoffs.
