August 23, 2019 – Team RDUTennis wins the 2019 Raleigh Pro League Championship taking all 4 courts against Team Wake Orthopaedics. A large crowd of 200+ turned out, despite the ongoing threat of rain, to witness Team RDUTennis’ 4th sweep of the season en route to the Championship and enjoyed a fun evening of tennis hosted by North Hills Club.
The Men’s 1 court was won by Team RDU’s Kyle Spencer and Jon Stokke, remaining undefeated for the season, over Team Wake Ortho’s Glen Kitner and Praveen Chandrasekhar 6-2 6-2. The next team point for RDU came from the Women’s court as Joanna Nalborska and Tessie Choo teamed up for the first time and defeated Wake Ortho’s Kris McGrath and Caylan Ashworth 6-2 6-2 in a hard fought match featuring spectacular baseline rallies. The Championship was sealed for Team RDUTennis when Cris James and Jon Davis won the Men’s 2 court 6-2 6-2 over Wake Ortho’s Lilo Pelegrino and Grady Matthews. The Mixed court became a formality at this point, but was probably the most competitive match of the evening as Team RDU’s Macy Fisher and Josh Franceschina won the first set 6-4 over Team Wake Ortho’s Liz Perkins and Justin Roberson and then fought to take the second 7-5 to complete the sweep for Team RDUTennis.
It has been a great season and was certainly a strong night for Team RDUTennis coming in this match at full strength. In fairness to defending Champion Team Wake Orthopaedics, four players that regularly appeared in the lineups this season were not available for the Championship match leaving tennis fans to wonder “what if”.
This was another fantastic season for tennis fans in Raleigh as the Raleigh Pro League featured the strongest group of players ever and largest and most enthusiastic crowds at all matches. We are so thankful for the tremendous support from our sponsors, the great job done by all of the match hosts, the hard work by our volunteers and partner organizations, the amazing tennis and enthusiasm of our players, and the support of all of the fans and tennis enthusiasts they came to watch and support the players. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.
