August 26, 2022 – In a fitting end to the 2022 Raleigh Pro League season Team RDUTennis and Team Wake Orthopaedics met for the 3rd season in a row to determine a champion. With each team having claimed a championship in their last two meeting, how could this match not come down to an exciting Captain’s Choice Super-Tiebreak for Team RDUTennis to win the 2022 Championship? With Team Wake Orthopaedics missing one of their top players and Team RDUTennis’ Joanna Nalborska being questionable for the match because of an injured thumb, it was anybody’s guess what the final line-ups would be and who would pull out the win. The record crowd of 400+ in attendance at North Hills Club were treated to an amazing evening of tennis, an exciting Captain’s Choice Super-Tiebreak to decide the Champions, live music and an overall great time.
Team RDUTennis scored the first court win as Captain Brian Rosenthal and Nalborska teamed up to win the Mixed court over Team Wake Ortho’s Amanda Janda and Co-Captain Cameron Rosenow 6-1 6-1. The Women’s court finished next with Team Wake Ortho’s Caitlin Whoriskey and Liz Perkins winning over RDU’s Meghan Coomes and Tessie Choo 6-4 6-0 to even the score at 1-court each. Team RDU’s Christian Welte and Dana Parziale put RDU up a court with strong play to best Wake Ortho’s Jon Janda and Justin Roberson 6-3 6-4 on the Men’s 1 court. This brought all attention to the Men’s 2 court where Team RDUTennis’ Kyle Spencer and Gani Adelekan split sets with Wake Ortho’s Jon Davis and Lilo Pelegrino 4-6 7-6 as Davis sustained an injury in the 2nd set hampering his movement and serving. Spencer/Adelekan jumped out to an early lead in the 3rd set tiebreak and looked to be cruising to the win, before Davis/Pelegrino staged their comeback to take the tiebreak 10-7, winning the court and sending the team match to a Captain’s Choice Super-Tiebreak to decide a champion.
Team Wake Ortho sent Whoriskey and Roberson to represent their team for the deciding tiebreak and Team RDU chose Nalborska, injured thumb and all, along with Parziale to try to get the win. In one of the most exciting tiebreaks of the season, both teams fought back and forth in an excellent display of tennis before Team RDU’s Nalborska/Parziale finally pulled out the win 11-9 to give their team the 2022 Championship.
Congratulations to both Team RDUTennis and Team Wake Ortho for outstanding seasons and representing the league well in the season finale. It was a season that will be remembered for its exciting matches, injuries and sickness that affected team outcomes, two new match venues, and record crowds throughout the summer. It makes you look forward to next year and ponder the question “will Team RDUTennis and Team Wake Ortho meet in the finals yet again?”.
