July 20, 2018 – The Summer Sizzle got underway, the rain held off, and the Raleigh Pro League showed off some of the best tennis of the year at the Cary Tennis Park. Team Mosquito Authority swept all 4 courts against defending champs Team Alfred Williams & Company and Team White Dahlia won in a Captain’s Choice Tiebreak against league leading Team RDUTennis in a battle of undefeated teams.
Coming off a critical win last week, Team Mosquito Authority brought their strongest line-up of the season to face defending champs Team Alfred Williams & Company. The Mixed court finished first as Meghan Coomes and Sean Ferreira were too touch for Henriette Williams-Alexader and Thomas Mozur and won the court 6-4 6-2 to give the Skeeter’s the first team point of the match. Shaun Romisher and Jose Velazquez up the lead to 2-0 by defeating Team Alfred Williams & Company’s Brent Bennett and Carlos Garcia 7-6 6-3 on the Men’s #2 court. The team victory was sealed for the Skeeter’s when Lena Leonchuk and Fiona Degnan won the Ladies Court over Nena Day and Alice Stubbs 6-3 7-5. Meanwhile, the best match of the evening was still being played on the Men’s #1 court as the teams split sets and started a 3rd set tiebreak. A light rain started and the men were moved indoors to complete the tiebreak. Mosquito Authority’s Kyle Spencer and Dana Parziale played strong tennis to win the tiebreak and the court over Paul Goode and Judson Williams 7-6 5-7 10-5. It’s hard to describe just how good this match was and from the spectators point of view, both teams were winners.
In the battle of the league’s undefeated teams, it fittingly came down to a Captain’s Choice Super-Tiebreak to decide who would retain the undefeated status. The ladies Court finished first as Team RDUTennis’ Elizabeth Speicher and Tessie Choo won over Jessica Miller and Kelly Riely 6-4 6-2. RDUTennis went up 2-0 as Jon Davis and Jonathan Stokke won the Men’s #1 court over Jas Schmitt and Paul-Henri Arrigoni 7-5 7-5 in another match that was just incredible to watch. Team White Dahlia got on the scoreboard as Will Suk and Ben Hunter won the Men’s #2 court over Pete VanGraafeiland and Marko Zivkovic 7-6 6-3. All eyes turned to the Mixed court to watch Sandhya Nagaraj and Doug Ormsby hold off 2nd set a comeback by Joanna Nalborska and Brian Rosenthal 6-3 7-6 to tie the team match at 2-all. Team White Dahlia put Nagaraj/Schmitt on the court and Team RDUTennis put Choo/Stokke to play for the team victory. Choo/Stokke started strong and jumped to a 7-1 lead in the tiebreak. But, Nagaraj/Schmitt got their footing and worked their way back to win the tiebreak 11-9 and keep Team White Dahlia undefeated.
The tennis was amazing! I imagine the Summer Sizzle players were pretty inspired when they took the courts for their tournament matches after watching the Raleigh Pro League in action.
