July 26, 2019 – A huge enthusiastic crowd turned out to enjoy the Raleigh Pro League’s second doubleheader of the season and watch Wimbledon Champion Abigail Forbes exhibit her tennis game. MacGregor Downs Country Club was packed to capacity with tennis fans from across the area.
Team Mosquito Authority did not disappoint their home fans with a big win over Home Team Greer. The Skeeters got on the board first as Brian Smith and Paul-Henri Arrigoni won the Men’s 2 court 6-1 6-0 over Home Team Greer’s Max Desmars and Marko Zivkovic. Team Greer evened it up at one all when Sandhya Nagaraj, despite having to serve underhand due to a shoulder injury, and Heather Waters won the Women’s court 6-2 7-5 over Mosquito Authority’s Meghan Coomes and home crowd favorite Mia Bobrowski. The Skeeter’s pushed it to two courts to one as Fiona Degnan (another home crowd favorite) and Sean Ferreira won 6-1 7-6 over Team Greer’s Kathleen Henry and Zach Nelson on the Mixed court. Everyone watched the Men’s 1 court to see if Team Greer’s Paul Goode and Danny McCain could force the match into a Captain’s Choice Tiebreak. Goode/McCain took the first set 6-3 over Team Mosquito’s Jas Schmitt and Michael Ogden. Schmitt/Ogden came back in the second set, fighting to a 5-4 lead and held a long service game to take the set and force a third set tiebreak. Both teams played tough in the tiebreak, but Schmitt/Ogden prevailed to take it 10-8 and give Team Mosquito Authority a 3-1 win for the evening and putting them into solid position for the play-offs as they head into their last regular season match next week.
Team RDUTennis secured their top position in the league with a 3-1 win over Team Brier Creek Orthodontics. RDU’s Tessie Choo and Kelly Glass won the Women’s court 6-3 6-4 over Team BCO’s Jenny Green and Erin Piechocinski to give Team RDU their first earned point of the evening. Soon after, Team BCO’s Justin Radloff and Michael Polasek won the Men’s 2 court 6-4 6-3 over RDU’s Jon Davis and Josh Franceschina. Team RDU’s Kyle Spencer, playing his first match of the season, and Jon Stokke held on to take the Men’s 1 court 6-3 7-6 over BCO’s Patrick Longest and Tom Eklund. In Team RDUTennis’ last regular season match of this season, the win guarantees a top seeding for the playoffs.
Team Brier Creek Orthodontics, being short a player, forfeited the Mixed Doubles court, which allowed us to invite 2019 Wimbledon Girls Doubles Champion Abigail Forbes to play the court as an exhibition. Abbey did not disappoint as she teamed with Team BCO Captain Chris Fletcher to defeat Team RDU’s previously undefeated team of Joanna Nalborska and Brian Rosenthal 6-2 6-0. Forbes and Fletcher played stronger and stronger as the match went on and left little chance that Nalborska and Rosenthal could stop their momentum. It was an honor to have Abbey play in the Raleigh Pro League and she certainly showed why she if one of the top junior players in the country and a Wimbledon Champion. I’m sure we will see a lot more from this young lady in the future.
Another fun night of tennis is in the books. Great job by MacGregor Downs Country Club of hosting the match.
