July 27, 2018 – A huge crowd turned out at North Hills Club Friday night for Try Tennis Appreciation Night and watched Team Brier Creek Orthodontics get their first win of the season and saw Team Wake Orthopaedics defeat previously unbeaten Team White Dahlia to secure a spot in the playoffs. The Raleigh Tennis Association was on hand with their mascot “Bounce” to recognize Try Tennis and Raleigh’s newest adult tennis players.
Team Brier Creek Orthodontics’ Tom Eklund and Christian Welte struck first as they bested Team Alfred Williams & Company’s Phillip Faulkner and Thomas Mozur 6-1 6-2 on the Men’s #1 court. Team Alfred Williams’ siblings Henriette Williams-Alexander and Judson Williams teamed up to defeat Jenny Green and Phillip Cardella 6-1 6-3 on the Mixed court to tie the team score at 1-1. Meanwhile on the Women’s court, it took a 3rd set tiebreak for Team Brier Creek’s Erin Faulkner and Kateryna Chorna to overcome dropping the first set and come back to win over Alice Stubbs and Martina Somoano 4-6 6-3 10-4 and give Team Brier Creek a 2-1 advantage. All eyes turned to the Men’s #2 courts where Team Wake Ortho’s Chris Fletcher and Will Plyler were locked in a battle featuring many long points and close games against Team Alfred Williams’ Paul Goode and Jeff Fadool. Fletcher/Plyler hung on to take the court 7-6 6-4 and secure the fist win of the season for Team Brier Creek Ortho 3-1.
In the other match of the evening, Team White Dahlia put their undefeated record up against Team Wake Orthopaedics. Team Wake Ortho went on the board first as Liz Perkins and, newly named University of Oregon Women’s Head Tennis Coach, Courtney Broadstone won over Jessica Miller and Erin Piechocinski 6-1 6-0 on the Women’s court in a match played as an exhibition due to the default by Team White Dahlia. The 1-0 lead was not enjoyed for long by Team Wake Ortho as Team White Dahlia’s Kelly Riely and Paul-Henri Arrigoni won the Mixed court over Kris McGrath and Cameron Rosenow 6-4 6-4 to tie the team match at 1-1. The crowd favorite match of the night was the Men’s #1 court where Team Wake Ortho’s Ben Wagland and Chase Helpingstine held on to win a close match against Will Suk and Jas Schmitt 6-4 6-4 to put Team Wake Ortho ahead 2-1. The focus became the Men’s #2 court where Team Wake Ortho’s Justin Roberson and Glen Kitner won the first set, but were down a break in the second to Doug Ormsby and Robert Lightbourn. Roberson/Kitner immediately broke back and scored another service break late in the set and held serve to close it out for a 6-4 7-5 victory that sealed the team win for Team Wake Ortho 3-1 and enough team points to secure a spot in the playoffs,
Definitely one of the liveliest group of spectators so far this season and an excellent night of tennis and fun at North Hills Club.
