August 25, 2017 – Just when you think nothing can top the excitement of the Playoffs, Team Alfred Williams & Company pulls out another thrilling victory, and this time to win the 2017 Raleigh Pro League Championship. Both Team Alfred Williams & Company and Team Wake Orthopaedics left it all on the courts and put on the best show local tennis fans have seen in quite a while.
A packed house at Seven Oaks Swim & Racquet Club witnessed the most exciting tennis as the teams fought to a 2-court each tie and decided the Championship in a Captain’s Choice Super-Tiebreak.
Team Wake Orthopaedics drew first blood by winning the Men’s #2 court as Glen Kitner and Justin Roberson bested Team AWC’s Thomas Mozur and Andrew Stewart 6-1 6-2. Team AWC evened the match score as Alice Stubbs and Julia Albritton won the Women’s court over Team Wake Ortho’s Kris McGrath and Macy Fisher 7-6 6-1. The Mixed court was locked in an intense battle and Team Wake Ortho’s Courtney Nagle and Cameron Rosenow took the victory 7-5 7-6 over Henriette Williams-Alexander and Philip Faulkner. With Wake Ortho up 2 courts to 1, all eyes turned to the Men’s #1 court where the teams split sets and were going into a 3rd set tiebreak. Treating the fans to some excellent tennis, Team AWC’s Paul Goode and Judson Williams won the tiebreak over Jon Janda and Lilo Pelegrino 10-8 to force the deciding Captain’s Choice Super-Tiebreak.
Nagle/Janda took the court for Team Wake Ortho and Williams-Alexander/Goode for Team AWC. Williams-Alexander/Goode played near flawless tennis to win the tiebreak 10-3 and secure the season championship for Team AWC.
