Rain forced Friday night’s RPL match between Team Monograms, Inc and Team White Dahlia indoors at Raleigh Racquet Club.  The club was a great host to a fantastic match in humid, swamp-like conditions that saw multiple apparel changes, all-over body cramping, and a run on the water cooler as players did their best to stay hydrated.

After the teams split the Mixed Doubles and Men’s #2 courts with a point a piece, it came down to Men’s #1 as the Haywood brothers came back from a set down to take the 2nd and force a match tiebreak.  Monogram’s Jon Janda and sub, Jason Ritchie, put on a show for the 50+ spectators that braved the soupy atmosphere to watch some unbelievable tennis.  In the end, Rob and John Haywood scraped by with an impressive 15 – 13 win after saving 2 match points and securing a 2-1 win for White Dahlia which puts them securely in 1st place mid-way through the season.

Next week’s match will certainly be interesting as Team Laverick and Team Monograms, Inc. vie for 2nd place and an opportunity to climb back into contention as the playoffs begin looming larger in the not too distant future!

Team Wake Orthopaedics To Play for Championship

August 19, 2016 - Looks like it rained everywhere in Raleigh except for North Hills Club as Team Wake Orthopaedics played their way into the Championship match by defeating Team Mosquito Authority 3-1.  The 2016 Raleigh Pro League presented by The Wallace Regner Group at Morgan Stanley Championship is set for next Friday night when Team Wake Orthopaedics plays Team White Dahlia.

In the last regular season match and needing to win two courts to get into the Championship match, Team Wake Orthopaedics received a gift as Team Mosquito Authority defaulted the Mixed Doubles court leaving only one court to win for a spot in the Championship.  Team Mosquito Authority was determined to challenge Team Wake Ortho on the remaining courts and scored the first point as Phillip Faulkner and Paul-Henri Arrigoni won the Men's #2 court over Team Wake Ortho's Will Suk and Michael Reilly.  The Mixed Court, being played as an Exhibition, finished next as Team Wake Ortho's Macy Fisher and Glen Kitner won over Kaitlyn Flaherty and Cameron Rosenow (Team Wake Ortho member playing for Team Mosquito).

On the Men's #1 court, Team Wake Orthopaedics Matt Rowe and Jas Schmitt cruised through the first set, but Team Mosquito Authority's Sean Ferreira and Thomas Mozur fought back to win the 2nd set and force a 3rd set tiebreak.  In an exciting tiebreak, Rowe/Schmitt held on to win 10-6 and give Team Wake Ortho the point needed to get them the spot in the Championship match.  The Women's court was the last one to finish and Team Wake Orthopaedics Amanda Hellberg and Nena Montgomery won over Fiona Degnan and Martina Somaono to ensure the team match at 3-1.

The stage is set for Friday August 26 at the Raleigh Racquet Club as Team Wake Orthopaedics goes up against Team White Dahlia for the 2016 Championship.
